How can missing teeth cause bone damage?

When a tooth is lost due to injury or decay, the gap left in its place can be very detrimental to your dental health. In addition to providing support for neighboring teeth, dental implants are recommended by our Hobbs cosmetic dentist to help keep your bite aligned and provide support for the jaw bone. When you bite down, the resulting pressure reinforces and strengthens the underlying bone. Bone loss, also called "resorption", can weaken the entire jaw bone and eventually lead to additional tooth loss.

How do dental implants create healthier teeth and bone tissue?

Unlike removable dentures, dental implants are permanently inserted into the underlying bone. The replacement tooth root serves as an anchor for the false tooth and allows your jaw bone to gain the positive pressure from your biting forces. The false tooth root provides stability so you can chew normally.

Why do many patients prefer dental implants over dentures?

Removable dentures are a high-maintenance solution to missing teeth. They need to be taken out and cleaned daily. They also do not offer the same jaw bone-building benefits as permanent dental implants. With an implant, there is no extra cost for adhesives or cleaning products and you do not need to worry about it coming loose. Also, dental implants are generally able to take more biting pressure than dentures.

Are there any food restrictions with dental implants?

Dental implants are designed for durability and strength. They may be used to eat all your favorite foods and can withstand strong biting pressure. Remember, however, that like natural enamel, implants can fracture or break with too much force or hard objects.

Is the implant procedure painful?

The dental implant process will involve surgery of the gum tissue, and each patient will respond uniquely to the effects of invasive gum surgery. Rest assured that Dr. Henderson uses safe medication to minimize discomfort, both during the surgery and the healing period. At your initial dental implant consultation, our cosmetic dentistry team will provide specific details on what you can expect throughout the entire process.
