Henderson and his experienced periodontal team, serving New Mexico and west Texas, fight the effects of gum disease every day with preventative care, gum disease education, and state-of-the-art treatment.

The Gum Disease Process

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, refers to the changes in gum tissue that occur when bacteria are allowed to invade healthy gums. Bacterial growth from plaque deposits can cause a number of problems and threaten your dental health if left untreated. What might start out as a small cavity in a tooth can spread, injuring delicate gum tissue and eating away at enamel.

There are two primary classifications of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis refers to the early stages of gum disease and usually involves inflammation of the gums. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease and often indicates irreversible damage. A patient with periodontitis may notice their gums beginning to recede or pull away from teeth. This creates pockets of space where bacteria can hide and cause more harm. If gum disease is not caught early enough, advanced periodontitis can lead to bone deterioration and tooth loss.

With periodontal treatment from an experienced dentist like Dr. Henderson, you can fight the effects of gum disease and control the damage done to your teeth and gums.
